With a choice of dusty sapphire blue, toasty burnt orange and everything in between – you’re sure to find the perfect pouffe to pad out your home décor. The finishes are luxurious too, with plenty of pleating, quilting and double-stitched styles to choose from.
What is a pouffe?
Pouffes, footstools, ottomans, footrests; whatever name you like to give them, they’re all pretty much doing the same job – and that’s keeping you comfortable. Footstool is an umbrella term, and is used to describe any piece of furniture that you rest your feet on, whether it’s a pouffe, ottoman or something else. A pouffe is a particular type of footstool that doesn’t have any legs – it’s kind of like a big, dense cushion that just sits straight on the floor.
The term ottoman is a little more specific, describing a footstool that’s cushioned but also designed with an element of built-in storage space. This makes the ottoman a particularly functional and handy piece of furniture. It can be used as a footrest, an extra seat, a storage container and even a makeshift coffee table if you pop a tray on top.
How to style a pouffe
Choosing a pouffe or footstool is an exciting design moment. While they’re primarily functional pieces, there’s no denying that our pouffes carry a strong sense of flair and luxury that’ll heighten the style of any space. Make a bold style statement by choosing a colour that creates contrast with the rest of your decor, or go for a more sophisticated, uniform vibe with a consistent colour and design.
If you’re going to be placing your pouffe in the living room, you’re going to need to think about how it’ll pair up with your sofa. Go with a colour that’s similar to your sofa for a matchy-matchy minimalist feel, or opt for an eye-catching contrast if you’re feeling courageous.
On a more functional level, the height of your footstool is also quite important. As a rule, it should be about 5cm shorter than your sofa to ensure maximum comfort when reclining. At the very most, your pouffe should be roughly the same size as your sofa. If it’s taller than your sofa by any margin, your footrest is going to feel more like a foot-test, and you’ll end up with an infuriating incline that’s less than comfortable.
