how to choose geometric cushions.

Geometric designs are no stranger to interior stardom, and have been popping up in trendy contemporary homes as far back as the early 1900s. Even the Ancient Greeks and Romans liked a dash of geometrics in their lives, with hypnotic meanders and Greek key shapes adorning decorative pottery, mosaics and architecture. Nowadays, it’s hard to keep up with the sheer number of patterns and designs available.

The main thing to keep in mind when choosing geometric cushions is that you’re going to need to strike a balance. The pronounced lines and shapes in geometric patterns can often feel intense, so it’s important to use them wisely and selectively in your space. Living amidst a bunch of clashing geometric patterns might sound like a fun time, but this will cause the impact of each individual pattern to become watered down.

The easiest way to achieve a well-balanced scheme is to choose one geometric shape and use it as a recurring motif throughout your space. You might use your square coffee table as a launching pad for a sophisticated box-based scheme, or take inspiration from your round clock or mirror for a scandi-style scheme grounded in curved lines.

how to style geometric cushions.

We’ve already covered the basics that go into a successful geometric scheme, but it really can’t be stressed enough how endless the styling options are. While the look is associated more with off-the-wall contemporary spaces, geometric patterns can have a place in even the most quaint and traditional of designs.

If you’re working with a traditional, country or rustic-styled space, there’s plenty of room to introduce a jazzy pattern or two while staying true to your original look. Just remember that the patterns are there to accentuate your space and not the other way around, so try not to get too carried away. Stick with neutral cream, grey and beige geometric cushions to keep things suitably subtle, or branch out slightly with a dusty blue or pastel pink option.

If you’re working with a monochromatic space or one that’s largely neutral, the introduction of a strikingly angular or swirlingly abstract pattern can bring buckets of energy to your space. Choose an eye-catching pattern like basketweave, waves or herringbone, and complement it with subtle continuations of the motif elsewhere. Match your pattern with a throw, bedding or even a statement wall if you’re feeling brave.
