what are our storage baskets made from?

Our storage baskets are made from a selection of sturdy, fibrous materials – all of which are fully biodegradable and eco-friendly. Some of our baskets are made from seagrass, which is the world’s only flowering plant that grows in the ocean. On the ocean floor, seagrass beds make vital feeding grounds for thousands of species of fish and other marine wildlife. It’s then cut, dried, spun, dyed (if colour is required) and woven to make furniture, containers and other homeware items. 

Palm leaves are another organic resource we make use of in creating our stylish storage baskets. They come from a family of plants known as Arecaceae, which are native to tropical and subtropical climates. The leaves are harvested, separated from their stalks and dried out. The central vein is removed, and the leaf is split into blades that are used to make the weave. The resulting finish is incredibly strong, fibrous and water-resistant – all while being fully biodegradable and compostable.

We also make storage baskets from manila hemp – a plant fibre which comes from the abacá species (a close cousin of the edible banana). It might ring a bell if you’ve ever come across manila envelopes or manila paper, which are made from the same fibre. It grows mainly in the Philippines, where it’s harvested, stripped and combed to create separated fibres which are later processed to create the sturdy weave.
