what are table runners?

A table runner is a long, narrow piece of fabric that’s generally draped lengthways over tables for added style and protection. They’re sometimes used instead of tablecloths, but can also be rolled out on top as a stylish extra layer.

The practice of using runners for tables dates all the way back to Ancient Egypt, while more ornamented designs became a big hit throughout the Renaissance period. They can be used to create a striking table centrepiece, or simply for an extra pop of colour and texture. Many of our table runners come in two different sizes – 180x35cm or 220x35cm – making them perfect for large dinner spreads and small coffee tables alike.

how long should a table runner be?

Got your eyes on a stylish runner, but not sure if you’ve found the right fit? While there’s no exact rule for how long a table runner should be, we recommend going for one that will hang at least 15cm over each end of your table.

To calculate what size table runner you need, measure your table lengthways from one end to the other (if your table is round, measure the diameter). You should choose a runner that’s at least 30cm longer than this measurement, to allow 15cm of excess at either end. There’s no rule against going longer or shorter depending on your preference, so don’t worry if your measurements aren’t adding up perfectly.
