Choosing wall art is a notoriously intimidating and often-avoided venture when it comes to decorating your home – but there’s really no need for all the fuss. At its core, art is about expressing yourself and having fun, so it shouldn’t be something to stress over. 

With the help of a few simple guidelines, your statement art piece or salon wall will nail the gallery look – and you’ll be turning heads like the Louvre in no time. 

The golden rule when hanging wall art is 145 centimetres on centre. This means that the centre of your art piece should – ideally – measure 145cm up from the floor. This number represents the average human eye height, and it’s used commonly by art galleries and museums across the world. 

If you’ve got especially low ceilings, ignore the 145cm rule and instead divide your wall height into quarters. Hang your wall art in the second highest quadrant to achieve a perfectly placed symmetrical look.

Similarly, the rules are slightly different if you’re hanging art above a sofa, console table, or other decor piece that’s sitting against your wall. In these cases, make sure to leave 20-25cm between the top of your furniture and the bottom of your wall art. This will help to avoid a cluttered look, and will stop your art looking off-centre or out of place.

If you’re creating a salon or gallery wall, try to visualise your collection as one big art piece to make sure you get a well-balanced effect. Use the 145cm rule for the most central piece, and leave about 5-12cm between each artwork to create a sense of space without losing the cohesive gallery look. A helpful rule of thumb is to hang darker, heavier works on the bottom left, and the lighter pieces on the top right. 

Make sure to take your time when measuring. Visualise how you want the finished product to appear, test the look by arranging your art on the floor, and use mild adhesive tape to map out your measurements on the wall.
